Hat Yai is the commercial capital of southern Thailand, close enough to the border that Malaysians drive up for the weekend to eat and shop.

The Kim Yong market and the night markets around it are the reason to stop, along with a Chinese-Thai dim sum breakfast. Songkhla, half an hour east, has an old town of shophouses and a beach with a bronze mermaid on it.

    The largest natural lake in Thailand, a shallow lagoon on the Malay peninsula joined to the sea at Songkhla. A small population of Irrawaddy dolphins survives in its northern reaches.
