   Meersburg Castle

   A castle on the cliff above Lake Constance, parts of it claimed as seventh-century, which would make it among the oldest inhabited castles in Germany. The poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff spent her last years in it, and the family that owns it still lives there.

   Weissenau Abbey

   A former Premonstratensian abbey near Ravensburg north of Friedrichshafen. It was founded in 1145, and its eighteenth-century baroque church survives.

   Neues Schloss

   A baroque palace completed at Meersburg west of Friedrichshafen in 1750. It was built as the summer residence of the bishops of Constance, and Balthasar Neumann designed its staircase.

   Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen

   The Zeppelin Museum at Friedrichshafen, opened in 1996. Part of the passenger accommodation of the airship Hindenburg, built in this town, has been reconstructed full size inside it.

   Dornier Museum Friedrichshafen

   The Dornier aviation museum, opened beside Friedrichshafen airport in 2009. It displays the flying boats and prototypes of the Dornier company, which began in this town.

   Wartegg castle and park

   A castle of 1557 above Rorschach with a view over Lake Constance, later the refuge of Zita, the last empress of Austria, who lived here in the 1930s. An English park of old rhododendrons surrounds it, and the house is now a hotel.

   Kunstmuseum Ravensburg

   An art museum opened in 2013 in a brick building of vaulted galleries, the first museum anywhere built to passive-house standard. It holds the Selinka collection of expressionism and post-war art, with Jawlensky, Nolde and Baselitz among the names.

   Hagenwil Castle

   A moated castle at Amriswil in Thurgau, first recorded in 1264 and a Swiss heritage site of national significance. It is still lived in, with a restaurant in the outbuildings and a drawbridge over the water.

   An observation tower on the Gehrenberg north of Friedrichshafen. Lake Constance and the Alps are visible together from it, and it is reached on foot from the valley.

   Stadttheater Lindau

   The town theatre of Lindau, opened in 1951 in a listed building near the harbour, taking touring drama, opera and ballet along with a chamber concert series and cabaret. The Lindau marionette opera also plays here.
