   Harhoog

   A rectangular megalithic tomb of the Funnelbeaker culture, built about 3000 BC near Keitum. It was moved a few hundred metres in 1954 when the airfield was extended, and now stands in open heath with the marsh behind it.

   St. Severin, Keitum

   A Romanesque church above Keitum, first recorded in 1240 though its roof timbers date to 1216, which makes it the oldest church building in Schleswig-Holstein. The tower of about 1450 served as a sea mark for shipping and, at times, as the island's prison.

   Denghoog

   A Neolithic passage grave of about 3000 BC at the northern end of Wenningstedt-Braderup on Sylt in Germany. Its name comes from the Söl'ring words for the thing assembly and for a mound.

   St. Niels

   The oldest building in Westerland, put up in 1634 and consecrated in 1637. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, whom the islanders call Niels, and still serves a Lutheran congregation in the middle of the resort.

   St. Martin Morsum

   A Romanesque church of the 12th century standing apart from Morsum on a low rise in the marsh, its plan — drawn-in chancel and rounded apse — matching the church at Keitum. It is listed as a monument of Schleswig-Holstein.

   Tipkenhoog

   A burial mound at Keitum on the German island of Sylt, right beside the Harhoog. Legend calls it the grave of a Sylt giant who fell fighting Danish invaders.

   St. Nicholas church

   The largest church on Sylt, a three-aisled brick building raised when the old village church could no longer hold the crowds that came with Westerland's growth around 1900. Heinrich Bomhoff and Friedrich Oskar Hossfeld designed it, and it is a listed monument.

   Tinnumburg

   An old ring fort near Tinnum on the island of Sylt, Schleswig-Holstein. The best preserved of Sylt's three forts, it borders a tidal creek toward the Wadden Sea on the north-west and low reclaimed marsh on the south-east.
