Mae Hong Son lies in a valley against the Myanmar border, under mist for much of the cool season. Two Burmese-style temples stand at the edge of a small lake and are reflected in it at dawn.

The road up from Chiang Mai is famous for its curves, more than eighteen hundred of them, usually broken with a night in Pai. Ban Rak Thai, a tea village founded by Chinese Nationalist soldiers, sits on the border itself.

    Namtok Mae Surin National Park

    A national park in Mae Hong Son province around a waterfall that drops in a single fall of roughly a hundred metres, among the highest in Thailand. The hills above it turn yellow with wild sunflowers in November.

    Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu

    The provincial temple of Mae Hong Son, on a hill at thirteen hundred metres above the town, with two white Shan-style chedis holding the ashes of monks. The name means stupa in Shan, and the view takes in the whole valley.
