   Wat Phumin

   The best-known temple in Nan, whose cruciform ordination hall of 1596 is entered by four doors guarded by nagas. Its murals, painted in the 1860s, record local Tai Lue life in detail, and one figure — a whispering man known as the Whisper of Love — is on every postcard in the province.

   Nan National Museum

   The national museum of Nan, in the palace the ruling family built in 1903, with teak floors and a wide veranda. Its best-known object is a black elephant tusk, presented to a lord of Nan and long treated as a talisman of the province.

   Wat Phra That Chae Haeng

   The most sacred temple of Nan, on a hill across the river, its chedi of 1355 sheathed in gilded copper plates and standing some 55 metres high. Pilgrims born in the year of the rabbit come here, this being that year's birth shrine in the northern reckoning.

   Wat Phra That Khao Noi

   A temple on the ridge above Nan, reached by a stair of some three hundred steps, holding a standing Buddha nine metres high raised in 1999 for the king's birthday. The terrace below takes in the whole town and the bend of the river.
