Iloilo was the second city of the Spanish Philippines and kept the churches to prove it; Miagao, built as a fortress against raiders in 1787, is World Heritage.

The riverside esplanade is the city's own promenade. Islas de Gigantes to the north is a chain of limestone islets with scallop farms. La Paz batchoy, the offal noodle soup, was invented in the market here.

    Jaro Cathedral

    The cathedral of Jaro in Iloilo, and the only one in the Philippines whose belfry stands across the street from it. The image of Our Lady of Candles on its facade is held by the faithful to be slowly growing.

    San Vicente Ferrer Church

    A neoclassical church at Leganes in Iloilo, an archdiocesan shrine of the archdiocese of Jaro. Repeated damage by war and by natural disaster has left it rebuilt and reworked into its present form.

    Jaro Belfry

    A baroque and neoclassical bell tower standing apart from Jaro Cathedral in Iloilo City. It is the oldest belfry in the Visayas and one of the few in the Philippines built detached from its church.
