Tacloban is on Leyte, where MacArthur waded ashore in October 1944 and said he had returned; the landing is marked with bronze figures standing in the shallows at Palo.

San Juanico Bridge runs two kilometres to Samar and is the longest in the country. Typhoon Haiyan came through in November 2013 and the city keeps memorials to it, including a ship left where the surge put it.

    Palo Cathedral

    The cathedral of Palo in Leyte, which served as a field hospital after the American landings of October 1944 — the pews were taken out and the nave filled with beds. It is the seat of the archdiocese.

    Yolanda Shipwreck Memorial Park

    A memorial park at Anibong in Tacloban built around the hull of a cargo ship that the storm surge of Typhoon Haiyan drove inland over houses in November 2013. The ship was left where it stopped.

    Tanauan Church

    A Catholic parish church at Tanauan in Leyte in the Philippines, in the archdiocese of Palo and dedicated to the Assumption. It was first built in 1704, and in 1860 transepts were added and a wall and watchtower raised against pirates.
